Dear Artists,

Corrente de Ar has been growing over the last three years. We have been presented with a huge number of artists who are enthusiastic about exhibiting their work collectively and being part of this artistic community.

Previous editions have been met with overwhelming response, with an average of 500 visitors for each exhibition weekend. We received applications from 270 artists and exhibited more than 100 national and international artists.

And we don't intend to slow down...

To match your support and interest in the Corrente de Ar initiative,
this year we will be exhibiting your work at the Hub Criativo do Beato,
with 700 m2 of exhibition space.

In order to cover administrative and production costs, we charge a symbolic registration fee of €8 to submit works to the competition.
We are a Collective with no public funding, we create these events on our own initiative to promote emerging artists and art in Portugal.

This fourth edition is born out of the gratifying feeling that this experience generates in us every year.

May it come in again...
...the Air Current

See you soon,
Mariana and Rita

Works can be sent internationally, by post or courier, however the collective is not responsible for any shipping or collection costs. Participants must be of legal age (i.e. at least 18 years old).

What can I submit?

Artists can submit any type of plastic or multimedia work, and the only formal restrictions are related to space constraints. Each artist may submit up to 3 works. A work also means a diptych, triptych or set that functions as a whole.

How much does the application cost?

Submission has an administrative cost of 8€. No refunds will be issued.

How do I formalise the application?

In the submission the artist must include, author, title of the work (even if it is "untitled"), year(s) of realisation, technique, dimensions and value. All submissions must be accompanied by an excerpt contextualising the work and a short artist biography. Visual submissions may be made in whatever format is deemed necessary for a better understanding of the work, photograph, video, photograph + video, etc. It is requested that the media submitted be edited as little as possible so as not to contaminate the original colours and forms of the work. All submissions must be made through the form indicated, submissions by email or other means will not be accepted. If files are larger than 10MB each, please additionally send media files to coletivo.correntedear@gmail.com and clearly state your name and submission number/name. Submissions after the closing date for applications will not be considered.

How to fill in each field about the work?

Title - name of the work, even if it is "untitled" Year - year(s) in which the work was realised Technique - materials with which the physical work was conceived, not its conceptual idea. Example: A photograph, even if taken analogically, should describe the type of printing and paper that constitute its physical realisation - e.g. inkjet printing on photographic paper. Dimensions - according to industry standards, they should be presented by height x length x width Price - even if the work is not for sale, it's important to give it a price for the insurance company to evaluate it. Description of the work - a short text, no more than 200 words, on why the work exists

When will I know the result of the application?

The jury's decision will be presented on 25 August 2024. After contacting the selected artists, if there are any withdrawals or constraints with any work/artist, artists who have been shortlisted may still be contacted. The jury reserves the right to contact some candidates prior to the official decision if any extra information is required during the selection process.

What are the conditions for exhibiting my work?

The Collective is not responsible for transporting the works to Lisbon. After the exhibition, if the work is sold, transport will be paid for by the buyer; if not, the artist will be required to collect it. The works will be consigned to the Collective for the duration of the exhibition. The Collective will be liable for damage to any work during the consignment period under a specialised insurance policy for works of art. For more information on cover, the conditions can be discussed if the work is accepted. Please note that the arrangement of the works is decided by the Collective. The aesthetic of the event is to maximise the use of space, so no single walls are guaranteed for works, nor is there any specific spacing between works.

What are the conditions of sale?

The works will be for sale to the public if the artist so wishes. The Collective will collect a 20% commission on the total sales value of the work. In the event of the sale of the work, each artist will be contacted and the greatest discretion will be taken in this transaction. The Collective is in charge of all transactions. If the work is not sold during the exhibition, it can still be promoted on the official Instagram where the sale can still take place. The sale of any work is not guaranteed and the Collective will not provide any type of reward or refund.

Maria Appleton.JPG
Maria Appleton

Visual Artist

Questioning the subjectivity present in urban systems, Maria Appleton’s practice finds its material form an ongoing research of colour and form developed through multiple techniques of dyeing, weaving and printmaking. Her pieces unravel as chromatic in-prints onto a juxtaposition of layered cotton, silk and other industrial fabrics, defining a series of vibrant abstract transparencies. Probing architectural conceptions of space, she defies human perception by translating optic perspectives and tracking bodily movements. Appleton delves into the dialogue established through the interaction of bodies in space, two elements that endure in a constant symbiotic relationship of metamorphosis with light. She sees the viewer as an active participant in the conception of the object itself, involved in a progressive sensorial experience open to interpretation. Maria Appleton began her artistic career at António Arroio, where she specialized in textile artistic production. He later completed a Textile Design course at Chelsea College of Arts, London, where he specialized in textile printing and dyeing. His work has been shown in international institutions and galleries as well as in independent exhibitions. In 2018 Maria Appleton was selected for a residency in Kyoto, Japan by the Kyoto Institute of Technology. At the EMMA institute in Pforzheim, Germany, she developed “Nicht eine Stadt, die war” (2020). Later, in 2022, she was invited by the Institut Français to go to the Cité international des Arts residency, Paris, France; CO- financed by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. In 2021, the artist was awarded her first solo exhibition “Gaze to see, Gauze to perceive” in Lisbon at Galeria Foco with whom she still collaborates today. Two years later, in February 2023, he exhibited a new group of works in Paris through Jovem Galeria Hatch. Recently, at the beginning of 2024, he presented a series of works called “Unperceptibles” at the invitation of Juan Vergez in his private collection in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
